Democratic Rep. Al Green (D-TX) recently filed Articles of Impeachment against President Donald Trump, citing his comments on a U.S. “takeover” of the Gaza Strip. The remarks, made during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have quickly drawn backlash from lawmakers and international leaders. Green accused Trump of proposing actions amounting to “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza.

Trump outlined a plan for the U.S. to take control of the Gaza Strip, claiming it would stabilize the region. The proposal includes resettling Palestinians into “safer and more beautiful communities” and developing the area to create jobs and housing. Trump said no U.S. military involvement would be necessary.

Trump said, “The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and create an economic development that will supply unlimited numbers of jobs and housing for the people of the area.”

Green said, “The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done,” adding, “Ethnic cleansing in Gaza is not a joke, especially when it emanates from the President of the United States, the most powerful person in the world.”

Green added, “The prime minister of Israel should be ashamed, knowing the history of his people, to stand there and allow such things to be said,” noting, “Ethnic cleansing has been a crime against humanity, and I stand here today in the well to denounce what was said, to denounce what the president said, to denounce the complicity of the Prime Minister of Israel, and to remind people that Dr. King was right: ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.'”

Five Arab foreign ministers from Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE condemned the plan in a letter to Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). They argued the proposal violates international law and destabilizes the region, particularly opposing the forced resettlement of Palestinians.

The Arab foreign ministers wrote, “We cannot support a plan that uproots an entire population and places them in unfamiliar communities under the guise of safety,” adding, “The Palestinian people deserve peace and stability, but this is not the way to achieve it.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson defended President Trump’s remarks, calling the plan a bold step toward peace in the Middle East. However, Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) dismissed Green’s impeachment filing, stating it is not a focus for the Democratic caucus.

Johnson said, “He’s taken bold, decisive action to try to ensure the peace of that region. It’s a bold move, certainly. Far bolder than what’s been done before, but I think we’ve got to stand unequivocally, in an unwavering manner, with Israel, our closest friend and ally in the Middle East.”

Green’s impeachment attempt is among the fastest in U.S. history, coming just two weeks into Trump’s second term. Green previously attempted to impeach Trump three times.
